A new fun project tapping into kids' creativity is helping ease a humanitarian crisis in East Africa.
The project is called Kids Draw for East Africa and organisers are calling on parents to donate paintings and drawings by their (primary school age) children, to be auctioned online to willing grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends. They're hoping to raise £2,000 in six weeks.
One of the brains behind the imaginative scheme, Charlotte Hillenbrand, said: "The kids can draw absolutely anything, we're not being prescriptive about subject etc. -- much more fun to see what they come up with. But what we really need now is drawings and paintings from kids that their parents are happy to see auctioned online. Hopefully the parents will also encourage their relatives to bid!"
I spent time looking at the pictures today and thought it was a great way of getting children involved with such an important charity.
Did you know every six minutes a child dies of starvation in East Africa? Can you believe that? Every six minutes. It’s hard to even grasp the thought that that’s even happening in today’s world, and more than 12 million people are at risk.
50/50 for those of you who don’t know, is like a digital Live Aid- pulling together fundraising on the internet to raise money for the famine crisis in East Africa.
They started six weeks ago with the aim of launching 50 web based fundraising projects in just 50 days ready by the UN’s World Food Day on Sunday 16 October to raise an incredible £1 million for Unicef’s famine aid, but now it’s about spreading the word to help and donate. So they need all the help they can get to reach their goal and save the children in Africa from this terrible event that’s going on. We can help, we can change the future for the families in need.
50/50 are very proud to be partnering with Unicef as their official Aid Collection partner. All of the money you donate to a 50/50 project goes direct to Unicef. In East Africa Unicef is currently delivering life-saving support in health and nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene and child protection, and your money or help will go a massive way in protecting and saving these families. Nobody deserves to be in pain like this.
50/50 was first hatched by Good for Nothing and Made by Many about six weeks ago. A tweet to Good for Nothing from Virgin Unite started the ball rolling, a few Skype conversations, followed by some emails and a couple of beers later resulted in a crowd sourced call for ideas, a hack weekend and several late nights and weekends juggling in between paid/client work.
