WOW. What would you do to raise cash for a worthwhile cause?
A 33-strong group of intrepid fundraisers went the extra mile when they trekked across Offa’s Dyke and the Black Mountains in Wales to raise more than £17,000 for Compton Hospice.
A big congratulations to everyone involved - what a fantastic achievement. A team from Garratts Chartered Accountants, who conquered the summit, is pictured.
At the highest point on the trail the hikers reached 2,150 ft above sea level, at the summit of Pen Allt-mawr, on the three-day trip, which involved two nights camping.
The challenge took the walkers over hill streams and through a forest with some of the braver members of the group taking advantage of the added bonus of a bath in a stream at the end of a hard day’s trekking.
The money raised by the group will be used for general funds at Wolverhampton-based Compton Hospice to provide free care for patients and relatives.
Katy Wilkes, who was part of a group of six workers from Garratts Chartered Accountants in Waterloo Road, Wolverhampton, who took part in the challenge, said: “We all had a lot of fun and laughs, especially around the campfire during the evenings.
“Our route crossed through the Black Mountains before dropping down through the wooded forests of Mynydd Du to the lush Vale of Ewyas. A steep ascent took us up onto the Offa’s Dyke path, overlooking the Olchon Valley to the east as we headed north towards Hay-on-Wye. Our finishing point was Hay Bluff.
“Camping out all added to the fun of the challenge.
“There was a real mix of abilities and we each took on the challenge for a variety of reasons. Some of us found it really physically demanding but we all managed to complete the entire trip raising a good amount of money for a very good cause.”
Compton’s community fundraiser Michelle Price said: “It’s a very big thank you to all of the walkers who took part in this year’s Offa’s Dyke challenge for making such an effort to raise such a large sum for Compton.”
