RETIRED business adviser John Smith has scooped £5,000 after wisely investing in playing Compton Hospice’s annual “superdraw”.
Mr Smith, aged 69, of Sedgley, and his wife Janet won the money after buying 10 £1 tickets in a special Silver Sweep lottery, which helped commemorate the hospice’s quarter century of caring.
He was presented with his cheque by former Coronation Street star Chloe Newsome and Silver Sweep mascot Barry Brush at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre.
Mr Smith said he was delighted to have won such an impressive amount of cash. He has supported the hospice lottery for around 16 years since its team cared for his mum, Winifred.
“When you go through something like that as a family it leaves a lifelong impression of how special the care is,” said Mr Smith.
“Ever since, we have tried to support Compton in our small way, and while it’s lovely to get something back, I can’t speak highly enough of the team.”
He added that some of the money would go towards helping his son Graham and future daughter in law Sue get married.
Other Silver Sweep winners were Mrs Deb Cousins, of Mount Road, Tettenhall who won a gold and diamond pendant from Rudell the Jewellers, Mrs Wendy Viner of Redwood Road, Kinver who won a £500 photography sitting courtesy of De La Motte studios and Mrs Jean Gunn, of Wootton Avenue, Wednesfield, who won VIP tickets to see South Pacific at the Grand Theatre with a meal at the Britannia Hotel and return limousine transport. Mrs June Sim, of Ashfield Road, Compton won a Fragrance Shop hamper.
Compton Hospice’s assistant general manager Chris Barron said there were also 25 “mystery prize winners” over the course of the promotion, with one lucky winner of a £500 hidden ‘Silver Ticket.’
He said: “We’d like to congratulate Mr Smith on his win and thank everyone who bought tickets in our Silver Sweep draw for their support which has helped us direct funds into the essential services that Compton provides.”
