TWO staff from a leading Birmingham opticians have a brighter future in sight after taking steps further up the career ladder.
Claire Fenton and Jayne Tyler, from Colin Lee’s Ward End practice, have both been promoted from receptionists to optical assistants after passing an NVQ level three and level two respectively.
Colin Lee director Clive Marchant said the firm was delighted by their achievements.
“For Jayne and Claire it has been a great experience as, when they joined us, they didn’t have solid formal qualifications,” he said.
“The founder of the company, Colin Lee, has campaigned for capable people to be given the opportunity to climb the career ladder through a structured training programme, whatever their background.
“If you train towards being an optical assistant, this can earn you points towards further opportunities along the career ladder should you so wish, regardless of your academic background.
“So to see Jayne and Claire get on so well and fit this in with their family commitments has been very rewarding.”
Besides Jayne and Claire, two more staff at Colin Lee’s have also been celebrating successfully gaining qualifications.
Kate Waldron from the company’s Burntwood practice has gained a degree in optometry and is now completing a supervised “pre-registration” year on site to allow her to become a qualified optometrist.
Angela Nolan-Fellows, from the Rugeley branch, has qualified as a dispensing optician after completing a three-year distance-learning diploma, and as a result, has been promoted to practise manage.
“We encourage our team to progress in their chosen career and it’s always heartening to see them doing well,” said Mr Marchant.
“Kate and Angela have done brilliantly and we wish them every success in the future. As a family firm, it’s very important to us that people feel valued and appreciated.”
