COMPTON Hospice is inviting people across the region to Light up a Life on Sunday at their annual service.
The event has drawn crowds in their hundreds for the past two years, after the hospice expanded their traditional memorial service to include carols by candlelight and the chance for visitors to make a unique dedication to lost loved ones.
The free event is open to anyone who has been touched by the hospice’s work and family members or friends can dedicate a light on the hospice’s ‘tree of life’ as a tribute to someone special.
Hospice chaplain, Rev Rick White, said: “This year’s Light up a Life ceremony promises to be a truly inspiring and poignant event.
“Christmas is a time when our thoughts turn to family and friends, and the Light up a Life service gives us the chance to remember those no longer with us, celebrating their life in a truly uplifting way.
“We’ll be joined by the Salvation Army band and Friends of Wombourne Support Group who will provide music for the event, and families will share their own special memories with us.”
The service is the climax of the Light up a Life Appeal which in previous years has raised more than £30,000 towards the support offered to patients and families currently facing the challenge of a life-limiting illness.
Because of the popularity of the service, provisions for parking, disabled seating, refreshments and viewings of the book of dedication have been arranged.
Thanks to help from Wolverhampton University, a shuttle bus service will offer a park and ride facility from the Compton campus car park, so on-site parking at the hospice can be reserved for disabled use.
Staging and a PA system have been set up for the outdoor service on the lawn but organisers have stressed that people will need sensible shoes as they will be standing on grass.
The service, which is being sponsored by the Coventry Building Society will be held a the main hospice site on Compton Road West on Sunday, December 9 at 3.30 pm.
Those who can’t attend can still Light up a Life by sending in a donation and a message of dedication. The hospice will send a gift to hang on their own Christmas tree as affirmation that a light on the tree of life is shining in honour of their loved one.
